Reconcili-Action!

Hey everyone, a local organization called Global Citizen Events is planning an entire month of activities in the Okanagan to promote reconciliation!

  • Participate – Indigenous Discovery Tours! Mar. 11, Mar. 12, or Mar. 13 (family gathering)
  • Attend – Water ceremony (and ongoing events through the month) Mar. 22
  • Live-stream – Stories and song with Cheryl Bear! Mar. 12

There are many more ongoing events on the Global Citizen Events website, including Arts for Social Change. Check it out!

If you haven’t heard of Global Citizen Events, they are an annual initiative that promotes the UN Sustainable Development Goals and celebrates the impact of local citizens in global and humanitarian efforts through their mission (Entertain, Educate, and Inspire to Action). You can learn more about them here.

Thanksgiving weekend…

Thanksgiving weekend is here! Holidays look different this year as we move into our “new normal” keeping our “bubbles” small, and staying safe and healthy at least 2m apart.

The CDC website has suggestions for safer celebration alternatives for Dia De Los Muertos, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Here are suggestions for lower risk activities over Thanksgiving:

  • Having a small dinner with only people who live in your household
  • Preparing traditional family recipes for family and neighbors, especially those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and delivering them in a way that doesn’t involve contact with others
  • Having a virtual dinner and sharing recipes with friends and family
  • Shopping online rather than in person on the day after Thanksgiving or the next Monday
  • Watching sports events, parades, and movies from home

And here’s an example of how you can get creative! Have a Thanksgiving “dinner” online via videoconference, where everyone eats a turkey meal that the “host” prepares the day before and drops off at “guests’” homes that morning.

Stay healthy and safe this long weekend, as we all connect with loved ones.

Great News! Inclusion Starts with Friendship

Hey everyone, one of our awesome home share matches submitted an article titled “Inclusion Starts with Friendship” to CLBC’s magazine for their Celebrate Diverse Abilities issue.

You can read it at this link, on page 9.

Thanks to Shelly, Janeen, and Travis for sharing!
