Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities!

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities!  Today, we join people all over the world as we celebrate how far we have come in support of community inclusion.  And, we also join in as we look forward to “what’s next” in this movement.

Since 1992, the United Nations has celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities each year.  Looking ahead to the future, this day is a big part of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to “leave no one behind.”  You can read more about the UN’s Agenda here.

More locally, here are some of the ways people are looking at this year’s theme, which is “empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”:

The BC Government has put together a series of articles on their website that reviews how the province has supported removal of barriers – and how they plan to keep removing barriers in future.  The list includes resources that are already available (such as CLBC, CAYA) as well as new ones.  One new strategy is a Cross-Ministry Disability Strategy Reference Group.  This group, made up of 18 assistant deputy ministers, is going to explore ways that ministries and government agencies can better collaborate in providing supports for people with disabilities.

The SelfAdvocateNet website has a page for this day and how it remains relevant.  They’ve also included information on events, including the Film festivals taking place in our communities.  CLBC has also added film festival information on their events page.

Our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, also took this opportunity to highlight the steps Canada is taking, including the proposed Accessible Canada Act – our first national accessibility law.

So, let us know what’s going on in your community and how you will be celebrating today!  Leave us a comment or send us a photo.

DABC Community Updates!

Hey everyone, we have heard from our colleagues at Disability Alliance BC that the Province of BC has issued a bulletin that explains the compensation process for former residents of Woodlands – check out more details at their website here or visit the Province’s site here.

It’s also the DABC Community Update that let us know about the Complex Medical Dental (CMD) pilot project funded by the provincial government (in addition to the existing benefits available).  This project is led by the BC Dental Association and creates new opportunities for coverage for people on disability assistance, income assistance, and their families.

Applications to participate in the CMD pilot project must be completed by a person’s dentist – we have included the DABC Community Update and the Information and applications forms below.

Calling all Story Tellers…

Calling all story tellers – CLBC is looking for SELF ADVOCATE STORIES for the next edition of CLBC MAGAZINE!  Authors will be paid $100 for their story and photo to appear in the magazine.  Check it out:

The CLBC Editorial Board is looking for stories from self-advocates for the upcoming winter 2018 edition of the Celebrate Diverse Abilities magazine. The theme for next edition is “Empowering People with Diverse Abilities- stories of Inclusion and Equality.” The Editorial Board is aiming to publish the magazine at the same time as International Day for Persons with a Disability on December 3. They want to recognize this important day and celebrate the contributions and successes of those with diverse abilities.

They are looking for 250 word stories that show examples of inclusion and equality in people’s lives. Stories could be about a part of someone’s life, like employment or friendship or community connection, and how this has created inclusion and equality. Story submissions will be accepted until November 14 and selected authors will be paid $100 for their story and photo to be published in the CLBC Celebrate Diverse Abilities magazine. (Preference will be given to authors who have NOT yet been published in Celebrate Diverse Abilities magazine.)

Please share this with any self advocates you know who may be interested in submitting their story. Interested authors can email their submission, with photos, to CLBC’s Self Advocate Advisor at Jessica.Humphrey@gov.bc.ca.

What a perfect way to continue on with October’s Community Inclusion Month celebrations!

Know someone who would like to tell their story?  Please pass this info along!
