Follow up: Building Networks with and for Each Other Presentation – June 2, 2016

I wanted to share with you a few pictures of last Thursday’s presentation for people with diversabilities.  The speaker, Nancy Ward from Oklahoma City, did a fantastic talk from the heart!!  Nancy educated 58 participants on improving their self advocacy skills and the importance of believing in yourself.  The attendance was overwhelming and the feedback from participants was sincere and positive.  I understand that some of the self advocates met with Nancy Ward after the presentation as well.  Since the presentation, self advocates have arranged for another meeting on Saturday, June 18th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm to be held at Pathways (123 Franklyn Road).   Hopefully, they can continue to grow in numbers and support each other in areas of concern.  Nancy Ward will follow up with the group in one year to see how they have advanced.  Please support home shares in your charge to attend and assist them with transportation if needed.  If you have any questions regarding the June 18th self advocate meeting please contact Shelley DeCoste at 250-712-1179.
Finally, helping facilitate this event was a highlight in my career of working with people with diversabilities and I thank you for your support in promoting this event!

Be Sun Safe!

As the sun comes out and the temperatures climb, remember to be Sun Safe!

  • Cover up. Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat made from breathable fabric. When you buy sunglasses, make sure they provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Limit your time in the sun. Keep out of the sun and heat between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. When your shadow is shorter than you, the sun is very strong. Look for places with lots of shade, like a park with big trees, partial roofs, awnings, umbrellas or gazebo tents. Always take an umbrella to the beach.
  • Use the UV Index forecast. Tune into local radio and TV stations or check online for the UV index forecast in your area. When the UV index is 3 or higher, wear protective clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Use sunscreen. Put sunscreen on when the UV index is 3 or more.
  • Drink plenty of cool liquids (especially water) before you feel thirsty. If sunny days are also hot and humid, stay cool and hydrated to avoid heat illness. Dehydration (not having enough fluids in your body) is dangerous, and thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.
  • Avoid using tanning beds. If you do use them, understand the risks and learn how to protect yourself.

NELSON – Night Steps 2016

2016 Night Steps Nelson, BC

Join us on Saturday, June 11th and help us change the lives of those who are blind and partially sighted right here in our community. This exciting, family friendly 5 km walk under the stars raises funds to support CNIB’s vital services that help people who are blind or partially sighted to lead rich, independent lives.

Taking part is easy. Register as a team or an individual and we’ll give you all the tools you need to make fundraising simple and FUN! If walking isn’t for you, join us as a volunteer or make a donation to a team or walker in your community.

After the 5 km walk, there will be an evening celebration with music, fun, family and friends. Join us now by clicking the registration button above.

KELOWNA: New Service at MHSU

Hello everyone!  There is a new service at Kelowna Mental Health and Substance Use called Walk-In Counselling.  It is available (free) on Mon-Wed-Fri 9:00 AM-11:30 AM, and Tue-Thu 1 PM-3 PM. 

Also, MHSU’s Access program (formerly called Intake) is available Mon-Fri from 9 AM-12 PM.  See information below, and attached sheets.

Walk-In Counselling:

Allows people to come in that day and receive counselling.   They can also return to that service anytime they feel necessary.  Clients end up becoming attached to a service and not necessarily one clinician.  This is not taking the place of other services, but creating a continuum of counselling services.  The approach is strengths based and looks to help clients focus on successes and empowering them to focus strategically on one main issue that day, just like you might do with a doctor at a walk in clinic.  One of the misunderstandings of this service is that clients “only get one session.“   It’s more of an approach of “one session at a time” in this particular service.   Clients are welcome to return as much as they want or ask for traditional counselling services.

     It would be appreciated if you could inform people with diversabilities you support about this presentation on June 2nd, by Nancy Ward from Oklahoma City.  Nancy is a remarkable presenter who will share her story and help expand the knowledge and importance of self advocacy.  It will also be a time for people from two countries, with a common purpose to get together and network, which is a positive thing.
