KELOWNA: Free Skating at Stuart Park!

As the weather gets chilly, there are lots of opportunities to stay active!

Ice SkatingStuart Park outdoor ice rink is gearing up for opening day on December 1st.  The skating rink is open from 6 AM to 11 PM each day,  and should remain open through late February (weather dependent).  Skates, helmets, and EZ bars available to rent onsite daily from 11 AM to 8 PM (except on Christmas Day).  Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets!

No matter what winter activities you enjoy, remember to be safe when you’re outside, and wear layers of warm clothing including hats and mittens.

WEBINAR: Communicating in Difficult Discussions – Nov. 24th

For anyone who is interested in learning about communication techniques to use in challenging situations, The Caregiver Network (TCN) is offering a free webinar from 6:30-8:00 pm (Pacific Time) tomorrow evening with presenter Jodie McDonald, a Registered Social Worker trained in the Non-violent Communication (NVC) technique, illustrating how to apply NVC specifically to caregiver situations.

It turns out talking to your airport and your airline are great places to start!

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has partnered with several organizations to offer help, resources, and support to people who may need a bit of help to plan their travel:

  • Spinal Cord Injury BC – partners to make a series of videos to support using a wheelchair when travelling
  • Canucks Autism Network – partners to make a resource kit and series of videos to help individuals and families minimize travel barriers, including the Autism Access Sticker (expedited airport processes)

To participate in the Autism Access Sticker program, you can talk with your airline when you check in.  You can call the airport or go on their website to learn more about how they are supporting people to travel (https://www.yvr.ca/en/passengers/navigate-yvr/accessibility-at-yvr/accessibility-travel-planning)

The union representing transit drivers in the Central Okanagan has served 72-hour strike notice as of Thursday, November 3, 2016.

Effective Monday, November 6, 2016 handyDART will only be providing essential services. 

Please make other plans for transportation.  It is also important to let your programs  and support workers know if you will not be able to attend activities and appointments.

This strike notice affects all transit in the Kelowna area.
