Reminder: Presentation for People with Diversabilities – Thursday, June 2, 2016

Hello everyone, the free presentation by Nancy Ward from Oklahoma City for individuals is being held this Thursday (June 2) – those interested can contact Margaret Milsom to attend.  See her note below!

Hello,
Just a reminder about the free presentation for people with diversabilities being held this Thursday, June 2nd from 12:00 – 3:00. (ATTACHED)  The topic is “Building Networks with and for Each Other”.  This presentation will give opportunity for the people we support to network with each other and improve their self advocacy skills, which in turn improves their quality of life.
It would be appreciated if you could inform people with diversabilities you support about this presentation on June 2nd, by Nancy Ward from Oklahoma City.  Nancy is a remarkable presenter who will share her story and help expand the knowledge and importance of self advocacy.  It will also be a time for people from two countries, with a common purpose to get together and network, which is a positive thing.
Please let me know by Wednesday, June 1st who would like to register.  Support workers may attend with people they support.
Thanks,
Margaret Milsom

Kelowna: Community for All Ages Stakeholder Workshop – May 31st

Invitation Template: TEST

You're invited

Community for All Ages Stakeholder Workshop

The City of Kelowna and Interior Health have partnered to develop a Healthy City Strategy, a long-term, integrative plan that focuses on healthy places and spaces, community health, and quality of life for all Kelowna residents.

Community planners and public health practitioners are working together with a focus on the first of six theme areas: A Community For All Ages.  This project is focussing on seniors, children and those with diverse abilities to work towards the vision of “a city that is healthy, safe, active & inclusive for seniors, children and those with diverse abilities”.

As a stakeholder that represents one of more of these groups (seniors, children or diverse abilities), the City and Interior Health invite one representative from your organization to participate in the upcoming stakeholder workshop:

Date:  Tuesday, May 31st

Time:  1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Place: Kelowna Yacht Club

 (1414 Water Street)

Please RSVP by Wednesday, May 25th to mkam@kelowna.ca

Planning and building healthy neighbourhoods, with adequate service and resource provision, can directly improve Kelowna residents’ physical and social health.

Please note:  If more than one representative would like to participate, please let me know and we can put an additional person on the waitlist.  Once we know the number of people wanting to participate, we will let you know if there is room for additional participants.

At this workshop we will discuss ideas around health, neighbourhoods, activities and daily life.  The outcomes of this workshop will be integrated with public consultation feedback to inform the creation of the Community for All Ages Plan.  The Community for All Ages Plan will identify areas to adapt policies, plans, and programs to respond to the evolving needs of our community. Actions for healthier seniors will provide co-benefits to children and residents with diverse abilities, enabling them to be active and engaged within our community.

For details on the public engagement and more details on this project, please see the Fact Sheet or visit kelowna.ca/planningprojects (click on Healthy City Strategy).

Background information:

*         Kelowna’s senior population is growing and will increase from the current rate of 20% to 24% by 2040.

*         1 in 3 people in B.C. are living with one or more diagnosed chronic diseases, which consumes approximately 80% of the provincial health care budget.

*         50% of adults and 91% of children and youth do not get the recommended levels of physical activity.

*         At 26%, Canada’s childhood obesity rates are among the highest in the world – almost doubling in the last 25 years.

Hope you are able to participate at the workshop!

Thank you,

Michelle Kam
