FREE Online Course! – Communication Assistants

Hi Everyone,

I just found out about this free online course that is being offered to train Communication Assistants. This is a great opportunity!

This is for anyone who assists a person with a speech and language disability when communicating in the community.

 

The course is particularly useful for personal support workers, attendants, communication disorder assistants, direct service professionals, family members,
disability advocates, and students in a disability area.

SPOTLIGHT: CLBC Standards for Home Sharing course – available online!

Hi all, CLBC’s Standards for Home Sharing course is available online!  This course is free to take, is available online, is broken down into flexible modules around key themes, and offers a certificate once completed.  There are great resources (videos, help sheets, tips) built into the content, too.  Check it out!  Let us know what you think in the comments.

RESOURCE: Books on Tape/Audio or Braille

Hi everyone, thanks to COPCS for passing around the info below – super that this is available!

NLS is a free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page. Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS offers books the way you want them: in braille or audio formats, mailed to your door for free, or instantly downloadable.

DABC Help Sheets Translated into 5 Languages

More great information from the DABC has been made more accessible to more people!

Dear Community Partner,

We have had two of our Help Sheets translated into five languages. The Help Sheets are:

 –  Help Sheet #14: Registered Disability Savings Plan and the Disability Tax Credit
– Help Sheet #16: Guide to Filing Income Taxes for People Receiving PWD/PPMB

SPOTLIGHT: New Resource in Kelowna!

Connections group therapeutic rec resource

Connections are group activities offered multiple times each week for neurodiverse adults.  The intent of Connections is to offer a wide assortment of fun, free, safe and age-appropriate educational events and activities that incorporate life-skill development, positive socialization, social interaction, special interest education, and therapeutic recreation.

Attending Connections, people can expect:

  • to get connected to like-minded, friendly, and pro-social peers in the community,
  • be part of a fun, safe, and inclusive space,
  • access activities otherwise unobtainable as a result of financial barriers,
  • to have education on important special interest topics,
  • to be involve in direct and indirect life-skill development.

Activities include, but not are not limited to: art projects, coffee socials, hikes, hockey games, group cooking, and educational workshops on topics that interest the group
